Board of Directors

A board of nine directors governs Medical Assurance Society New Zealand Limited (MAS). Their role is to ensure that high quality service and sound business practice are at the forefront of every business decision, allowing MAS’s relationship with its Members to grow and prosper. The board approves MAS’s strategic objectives, annual budgets and the overall framework within which business is conducted. The board also act as directors for most of MAS's subsidiary companies (see below for information about the board of Medical Securities Limited).

 

 

Richard Tyler, Chairman

Appointed Chairman: September 1996


Richard is a Wellington-based GP. He is also Chairman of Compass Health Wellington Trust and Trustee of Compass Primary Health Care Network, Director of Compass Health Ltd, Director of BPAC NZ, Board Member of RNZCGP and Executive Member of GPNZ. Richard has expertise in the governance of primary health and primary healthcare organisations and is MAS’s medical adviser for underwriting on Medical Life Assurance and personal health.

 

John Isles, Deputy Chairman

Appointed 27 July 1988

 

John is also based in Wellington. He is a Director of PSIS Ltd, Woolyarns Holdings and PrimePort Timaru and is on the Advisory Board of the West Coast Development Trust, Interweave Ltd and the Pharmac Drug Tender Evaluation Committee. He has expertise in general commerce, public policy and Maori land and Treaty settlements.

 

 

Katie Ayers

Appointed 25 June 2008

 

Katie is a paediatric dentist in Hamilton, with expertise in paediatric dental public health and dental workforce issues. She is also Director of Acka Health Limited and Anglesea OMS.

 

 

 

 

Frank Frizelle

Appointed 28 August 2013

 

Frank is Professor of Colorectal Surgery Christchurch Hospital and Academic Head of Department of Surgery at Otago University, Christchurch. He is also the editor of the New Zealand Medical Journal and a member of the NZ Institute of Directors. Frank is also a director of Geordie Hill Station and Christchurch Colorectal.

 

Harley Aish
Appointed 26 June 2013

Harley is a General Practitioner in Otara, South Auckland. He has been heavily involved in a variety of primary-secondary integration initiatives, from guidelines to new models of care. In addition he has been a Director of ProCare Health Ltd since 2001.

 

Helen Rodenburg 
Appointed 4 September 1996

 

Helen is a GP in Wellington with expertise in primary healthcare, especially clinical quality and primary mental health. She is on the board of the Island Bay Medical Centre and the Clinical Quality Board of Compass Health.

 

Craig Thompson

Appointed 25 July 1990

 

Craig is Wellington-based and Chairman of Accent Group Limited and NRS Media Group Limited. He is also Director of Woolyarns Holdings Ltd and Curtain Studio Ltd. He has expertise in commerce, including finance, accounting and marketing.

Alastair Hercus

Appointed 28 August 2013

 

Alastair is a partner at Buddle Findlay with extensive experience in mutual organisations and the health sector. Prior to becoming a director of MAS, Alastair served as an independent director for Medical Securities Limited (MSL) from 30 November 2010 until August 2013. Whilst remaining on the MSL board, Alastair is no longer an independent director.

 

Danelle Dinsdale

Appointed 28 August 2013

 

Danelle is a commercial lawyer who has spent the last 12 years overseas advising boards and senior executives on change management, mostly in the insurance and banking sectors. Since returning to New Zealand, she has been working on a portfolio of commercial property and agricultural interests. Prior to becoming a director of MAS, Danelle served as an independent director for Medical Securities Limited (MSL) from 30 November 2010 to August 2013.

 

Medical Securities Limited's board is made up of the following directors listed above: Richard Tyler, Craig Thompson and Alastair Hercus. In addition, MAS Chief Executive Officer Martin Stokes serves as a director, alongside the two independent directors listed below.

 

Howard Clentworth

Appointed 28 August 2013

 

Howard is a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology at Boulcott Clinic and Director of Digital Impressions. Before becoming an independent director of MSL, Howard served on the MAS board for 14 years.

 

 

 

Lindsay Knowles

Appointed 28 August 2013

 

Lindsay is a shareholder and executive director in a family business, ACME Supplies Limited - a national wholesaler of office products and hand tools. He is also a director of Cranford Hospice Trustee Limited and the chairman of Howick Baptist Healthcare Limited. Lindsay has served on the boards of HBS Bank, Presbytarian Support East Coast, Te Mata School and GPH Society (a not for profit charitable trust import distribution venture).

Lindsay has 15 years experience as a corporate banker with ANZ Bank New Zealand Limited, specialising in debt raising in the capital markets.
