Our story

We're a proudly New Zealand-owned insurance and investment company that's been helping our Members navigate life with confidence since 1921. As a mutual we’re owned by our Members so we have their best interests at heart, helping them grow their wealth and protect what matters most. And our Members love us, voting us Consumer People's Choice for our House, Contents, and Car insurance for 9 years running—yay!

Founded by doctors, we’re big on care—both for our Members and the wider community. That’s why we created MAS Foundation, funding projects to improve health and wellbeing equity across Aotearoa New Zealand.

At MAS, we’re on a mission to get even better at the service our Members love us for. This means rebuilding our tech stack and systems so we can work in new ways, create awesome experiences for our Members and improve what we do. We’re a small company where you get to have a big impact.

Your health matters. That’s why all permanent and long-term (12+ months) fixed-term staff get fully subsidised health insurance with nib (their premier base cover and specialist health cover) because peace of mind is priceless!

MAS Days

Work-life balance is important, so we’re giving you a little extra time to unwind! Permanent staff get two additional days of leave each year (on top of your annual leave) because rest is just as important as the hustle.

Enhanced parental leave

Growing your family? We’ve got you! We top up parental leave to 100% salary for 26 weeks and keep your KiwiSaver contributions going. Partners, we see you too—you’ll get 10 days of paid leave to soak up those special first moments. Plus both primary carers and partners get up to two weeks pre-baby leave for scans, classes, and those all-important ice cream runs.

Life insurance

Permanent staff automatically receive fully subsidised life insurance, with cover equal to twice your annual base salary. No one likes to think about it, and we hope it never occurs, but we want to provide our people with peace of mind so they can live their best lives.

Wellbeing and work-life balance

Sam's favourite thing about working at MAS has always been the people. She's never worked anywhere with such a supportive, inspiring, and connected team — from the MSC all the way to the CEO, you can talk to anyone. She also plays in the MAS netball team on Wednesday lunchtimes.

Colin has been with us for over 16 years and loves how we not only help our Members businesses but also the family, staff, and the communities that they service. Colin helps businesses find the right cover to protect them as well as providing business risk reviews and preparing policy renewals.
