For almost a century, our Members have trusted us to protect what matters most to them and their families.

Not only do Members trust us to protect their houses, possessions, livelihoods and retirement savings, they trust us to protect their personal information. We take this responsibility very seriously and treat your personal information like it was our own.

In recent weeks, new privacy legislation has come into force in New Zealand, and we thought it was a good opportunity to review our privacy policies.

Protecting our Members' personal information

Our Privacy Statement describes our privacy policies and processes, and explains what information we collect from you; how we collect this information; and what we use this information for.

The Statement also sets out the circumstances in which we might need to disclose your personal information, for example if we need to provide your address to an assessor to check damage to your house.

Sometimes, we will also be required by law or by contract to disclose certain pieces of information to other parties.

For example, from next year we will be managing natural disaster claims from our Members on EQC’s behalf, and will be required to share information with EQC to help them better understand the risks posed by natural disasters in New Zealand. This is a new use of your personal information that we wanted to alert you to.

Improving our products and services

We hold information about products you have held, and your relationship with MAS for as long as there is a business need or a legislative requirement to retain such information. Holding information indefinitely helps us to improve our products and services, correct any errors that may arise, and to offer you other products and services in the future.

We are committed to keeping your personal information safe and secure. This means we follow generally accepted industry standards to protect the personal information we hold against unauthorised access, modification or disclosure.

You can contact us at any time in writing to request access to, or correction of your personal information. You can also ask us to delete your personal information. We will work with you to delete the information in accordance with your wishes, unless we have reasonable justification to keep it.

Get in touch

If you have any questions about our Privacy Statement in general, or you would like to discuss the personal information we hold about you, please email our Privacy Officer.
