eleven: the gift of blood

By MAS Team

Who are you and what do you do in your day-to-day job?

I am Phillippa and I'm a member of the MAS IT Helpdesk.

How did you use your 'Here for Good' day?

I'm not sure yet who I helped today, but today I made my 33rd blood donation. I will find out in a couple of weeks, via the NZ Blood mobile app when my donation has gone on to help somebody in need.

Why did you choose them?

I am the only member of my family who is eligible to donate blood. We all have family members and close friends who have received the lifesaving gift of blood and blood products from NZ donors. It only takes a small time out of my day and gives so much back to whoever receives it.

What did you do?

It is so easy to donate blood! The mobile units are frequently in areas close to our offices and you are eligible to donate every 90 days. You can book appointments online or via the mobile app. It is as simple as popping on down to your appointment and making your donation. Finish up with a cup of tea and a biscuit and you have helped save a life!

What did you enjoy most?

The bit that makes me the proudest and happy about donating, is when you receive a notification that your blood has been used to save a life.

What did you learn from the experience?

As long as I am eligible I will continue to donate when I can. There are some really inspirational stories about donors who have made 50+ donations and donated well into their retirement years. For something that is a small intrusion on your time, that can be so beneficial to many it's a simple decision to make!

How can I help?

More information is available on their website www.nzblood.co.nz and you can always take a friend or colleague along with you if you are afraid.
