Three tips to set yourself up for a successful summer

By MAS Team

Summer's been a long time coming. We're finally here and it's time to make the most. But before you check out completely, why not set yourself up for a summer of success?

Here's our top tips to put your summer to work.

1. Write a CV that sells

After a long year hitting the books, it's time to bring in some cash. Whether it's your dream post-study job or something to pay the bills, these writing tips will help make your CV sing.

Use a template

SEEK know a thing or two about the job market. So their CV template is a great place to start.

Keep it short and sweet

Your boss-to-be doesn't need your life story. Two A4 pages, printed back-to-back is more than enough.

Proofread, then do it again

Nothing says "struggles with attention to detail" like a typo. Proof your CV with a fine-tooth comb.

2. Become an email expert

Writing smart emails is an easy way to impress any potential employer. And save them a fair bit of headache along the way. So while your peers are busy "sending-it" in the sun, here's how to "send-it" like a pro.

Start with a strong subject

It's the first thing your reader sees – so make sure it's clear, specific and relevant to your reader.

Cut to the chase up front

It's impolite to make your reader do the hard work. So don't beat around the bush. Make your point ASAP.

Stop before you send

Before you press 'send' – stop and review these other top tips to make your email the best it can be.

3. Get savings savvy

Retirement seems a lifetime away when you're young. But it pays to think about it early. So this summer, take time to sort your savings, and think about tomorrow. Here's how to grow your KiwiSaver.

Maximise your contribution rate

Boost your KiwiSaver contribution rate from 3% to 8% and start squirrelling more now for later.

Check which fund you're in

Ditch the default settings and choose an investment fund that aligns with your savings goals.

Power up to power on

On one hand, you now have the brain-space to tick boxes you've been neglecting all year. On the other – you're probably exhausted. So whether you're job hunting, networking or saving this summer, make sure you take time to relax too. Because the best way to put your summer to work is to take care of yourself.
